Impressive is the ascetic temple of Agioi Theodoroi which is located in the bay of Zaltsa near the acropolis of ancient Voulis, built on top of a vertical rock of the Corinthian Gulf. Archaeological findings, mainly shells and tiles, testify that this rock has been continuously inhabited since the 7th century BC. Since ancient times, due to the excellent view of the Corinthian Gulf, it served as an observatory of the movement of ships.

The presence of Saint Luke in the area was the reason for many hermits and ascetics to settle on these slopes of Mount Helicon around 950 AD. Therefore, a small brotherhood of ascetics settled on the plateau of the steep rock, as evidenced by the chipped well and the remains of the cells with the chimneys dug into the rock. The monks remained on the rock until the Greek Revolution of 1821. After the liberation from the Turks and the creation of the Greek State, the ascetic monastery was abandoned and almost destroyed. In 1994, a diligent effort brought the site back to life, creating there a center for archaeological, historical and theological studies. The view from the monastery of the Zaltsa beach and the Corinthian Gulf as far as the Peloponnese is magnificent.

Apart from the monastery, the visitor of the area should visit the church of Panagia Kalamiotissa and the ruins of the church of Agios Nikitas. Access to the area is currently made rather difficult by a small stretch of dirt road that is in the process of being asphalted.

The monastery operates as a male monastery and celebrates on the Saturday of the first week of Lent. Responsible of the monastery Monk Isaac. Tel: +30 6981889418
