Parts of the protected areas of Axios Delta National Park, Haliacmon and Alikes in Kitros are located in Pieria.

It is an ecosystem of river estuaries, swamps, lagoons and salt lakes. Thanks to the rich alternation of environmental conditions of the area – from farming stretches to fields and salty grounds, muddy areas and sand hills -, it is the ideal habitat for many species of wild animals and birds.

Thanks to its great ecological significance, the area has been listed in the ecological protected areas’ network Europe NATURA 2000 and it is protected under the International Ramsar Convention for wetlands.

The protected area of the Axios-Loudias-Haliacmon Delta is a great “educational tool” and is ideal for environmental education projects.
