The Pierian Mountains are the northwest extension of Mount Olympus, Flabouro being the highest peak at an altitude of 2193m. The mountains are the natural border of the Municipalities of Pieria, Kozani and Imathia. On the east side, they border with the plain of Katerini. On the north and west side, they reach up to the river Haliacmon and on the south side, they are connected to Mount Olympus through Titarus.

The unique beauty, the geological mildness and the harmony of the landscape impressed the Ancient Greeks and they picked this mountain for the Muses of Pieria (Pierides), protectors of poetry, music, singing and dancing, who were impressed by the wonderful environment to such an extent that they decided to remain in the area forever. Their melodious song echoed in the mountain tops and the gorges. The song ceased to echo when Pierides were beaten in a race by the Muses of Mount Helicon and were turned into birds.

The Pierian Mountains have climbing shelters, many trekking routes leading to the mountain tops and pleasant routes to hike in a beautiful natural environment through dense woods and creeks.

The Pierian Mountains were included in the European Ecological Network “NATURA 2000”.

FLORA

The main features of the rich flora of the Pierian Mountains are the deciduous forests of beech trees, oak trees, chestnut trees, pine trees and fir-trees. Plane trees, maple trees and chaste trees form unique groves at the banks of the mountain streams. All the ordinary flora from Mount Olympus also grows in the Pierian Mountains. Pink anemones, orchis, wild pinks and wild strawberries are some of the rare species of flora found in the Pierian Mountains.

FAUNA

The fauna in the Pierian Mountains mainly consists of foxes, martens, wolves, squirrels, wild boars, hares, small predator birds, partridges, quails and other bird species. Reptiles, such as snakes, turtles, lizards, crickets, cicadas, butterflies and other insects also inhabit the area.
