Petra is a small settlement built at the southwestern foot of Mount Olympus at an altitude of 580m. with an amazing view of the surrounding area.

Before reaching the settlement, inside an impressive creek of Mount Olympus, the visitor admires the historic alleys of Petra, which was the ancient passage from Pieria to the rest of Greece.

On the eastern gate, inside an impressive steep rock are the remains of a Byzantine Castle, buildings and acobbled street. An arched bridge and a church are the unique examples that testify to the long history of the old settlement of Petra.

An important monument is the byzantine Holy Temple of the Presentation of Mary in the old monastery of Petra (11th century).

Visitors can admire the traditional stone-built houses and enjoy the local cuisine.

The area is ideal for quiet walks, rest, hiking, climbing, mountain biking and 4x4 routes. From this point on, the visitor can embark on climbing routes to the slopes and other peaks of Mount Olympus.

It is 28km. away from Katerini and can be easily accessed by the national highway of Katerini-Elassona (intersection of Foteina).
