Dion, the sacred city of the Macedonians and the sacred place of Zeus at the foot of Mount Olympus, is just 5km away from the coasts of Pieria. It reached a peak during the Hellenistic Period and in the years under the Roman empire as it was one of the earliest Roman colonies in the Macedonian territory.
The city was dedicated to Zeus and religious ceremonies were taking place annually in honor of the father of the gods. Dion was the summer residence for the ancient Kings of Macedonia and also a sacred worship place, its residents called Die, Dies or Diaste.
The end came for the city of Dion on the 5th century AD when disastrous earthquakes, floods and other acts of God marked the end. The residents fled the city in fear and climbed the low heights of Mount Olympus for safety.
Dion is home to the Archaeological Park of Dion, one of the most significant sights in Greece next to other significant ones such as the Sanctuary of Demeter, Isis, Dionysus and Asklipio.
