Ancient Pydna
Ancient Pydna is located in the southern part of the contemporary settlement of Makrygialos and played a crucial role in the history of Macedonia, thanks to its harbor and its strategic location.
The area welcomed its first residents at the end of the Late Bronze Age. Excavations revealed countless tombs dating to the early Iron Age, the classical era, the Hellenistic period and the roman period with rich findings such as iron and bronze weapons, golden, silver and bronze jewelry, items made of clay, glass, silver and bronze vessels, ancient clay figurines, coins and other items.
Byzantine Pydna
Byzantine Pydna was the most significant medieval city of Pieria. Ruins of the castle have been excavated revealing its interesting fortification architecture and the metabyzantine episcopal temple dating to the 4th century.
It was renamed Kitros after the 6th century.
