The Holy Monastery of the Holy Mary of Makryrachi is located on the northwestern side of the prefecture of Pieria, 25km from the center of Katerini.

It was established on the 10^th century and it became a stauropegion monastery (under the authority of the territorial church) on the 19^th century.

The catholicon (main church) of the Monastery is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary.

In 1878, when the revolution of Olympus in the Macedonia area was declared, the Monastery played an active role in the battle of independence. For this reason, however, it suffered severe damage from the Ottomans.

As of 1993, it has been a women’s cenobetic monastery.

The miraculous icon and the Agiasma (Holy Thing) are worth a visit. The monastery is celebrated on August 15^th.
