Saint Dionysius of Olympus, after staying in the Monasteries of Megalo Meteoro in Kalabaka, Mount Athos and others, stayed in Olympus in 1542.
900m above the valley floor, inside the Enipeas Gorge, on a naturally protected flat area between two streams and 18km from Litochoro, he built the Monastery which he dedicated to the Holy Trinity. Later, however, the Holy Monastery was named after Saint Dionysius of Olympus.
Saint Dionysius was an eremite (monastic) in a cave under a rock, about 20 minutes away on foot from the old Monastery. The place was called “Holy Cave” and it exists to date, attracting many visitors every day.
From the location of Prionia, that can be reached by car, take the E4 path to Litochoro. Before the Old Monastery of Saint Dionysius, we see the typical clearings and a small hut. Turn right and the path will lead you to the Enipeas waterfall within a few minutes.
Returning to the E4 path, we cross Enipeas over a wooden bridge and continue our walk for 20 minutes towards the Holy Cave. From that point, we return to the Old Monastery where we can visit the catholicon (main church), currently being renovated, as well as the surrounding areas of the monastery.
You can return from the monastery using the same path, up to Prionia and from then on, to Litochoro or drive to Litochoro.
